The Oliver

Washington, DC

Design Rooted in Heritage

Situated at the northern gateway to Howard University in Washington, DC, The Oliver is a landmark thoughtfully designed to enhance student life while honoring the university’s storied heritage. This dynamic building seamlessly blends student residences with office spaces, including the Howard University Alumni Center, creating a vibrant hub that reflects and enriches the surrounding community.

Drawing inspiration from the intricate patterns of African woven textiles, the façade reinterprets traditional geometry through contemporary materials and form. Illuminated two-story metal-paneled shadowboxes unfold rhythmically across the exterior, interwoven with horizontal bands and geometric window arrangements that evoke the art of weaving. This layering crafts a compelling play of light, texture, and depth that brings the building to life.

At street level, transparency and connection guide the design. A red brick base pays homage to the historic gateway pillars along Fairmont Street, anchoring the building within its architectural context. More than a structure, The Oliver serves as a modern, identity-rich gateway to Howard University—offering a versatile, engaging environment that celebrates and supports student life.
