The Howard University Alumni Center unites the Department of Alumni Relations and the Office of University Communications in bold, culturally resonant spaces that celebrate one of the nation’s most distinguished HBCUs. Located within The Oliver, a new mixed-use building on campus, the 40,000-square-foot center serves as both an administrative hub and a vibrant gathering place for alumni, donors, and staff.
Commissioned by the Owner, the project required close collaboration with university leadership to bring multiple departments together while providing flexible co-working, event, and collaboration spaces. Despite challenges posed by a concurrent base building and interior build-out, the team maintained agility and clear communication to deliver the project on time and within budget.
At the heart of the design is a monumental stair framed by a wood-paneled feature wall showcasing back-lit portraits of iconic alumni within custom lightboxes. Symbolizing growth and legacy, this focal point connects to a skylit lower-level event space framed by warm wood tones, terrazzo flooring, and inviting lounge areas.
Howard’s identity is woven throughout, seen in the blue accented reception desk, logo-applied glass partitions, and color accents defining departmental zones. Designed for flexibility and inclusivity, the center integrates podcast and Zoom rooms, acoustic treatments, and varied sensory environments.
The result is a modern, welcoming space that honors Howard University’s heritage while embracing its future.
